Dalene Matthee (1938-2005) - South African Writer
Background
Dalene Matthee, (n�e Scott) a direct descendant of Sir Walter Scott, was born in Riversdale in 1938. As a widely known author of 13 books, she is best known for her four �Forest books� on the Knysna Forest: Circles in a Forest, Fiela�s Child, The Mulberry Forest and Dreamforest. Her books have been translated into 14 languages.
Dalene�s special relationship with the Knysna Forest started in 1978 when she first visited the forest. She felt strongly about the conservation of the Forest.
She died in 20 February 2005 and a memorial has been erected for her in the Knysna Forest.

� Dalene Matthee Big Tree - The giant Outeniqua Yellowwood Tree at Krisjan-se-nek This tree is some 880 years old and stands 40 meters tall.
� Circles in a Forest hiking trail - Follow one of the hiking trails to experience the forest first-hand. Two trails start at Krisjan-se-nek; one trail of 3 km (about 1,5 hours) and one of 9 km (about 3 hours).
� Dalene Matthee Memorial - Memorial Krisjan-se-nek. One of Dalene�s favourite spots in the Knysna Forest. Her ashes were also scattered here.
Where to find us
•Physical:
Krisjan-se-nek picnic site situated in the Millwood Forest above Rheenendal at the Dalene Matthee Monument and Big Tree.
•Directions:
Follow the N2 from George to Knysna. Take the Rheenendal turn-off 15 km before Knysna. Continue along this road for 12.6 km until you reach the Bibby's Hoek and Goudveld turn-off just past Rheenendal. Turn right here and follow the dirt road until you reach a four-way stop. Continue straight on until you reach the Sanparks entrance boom gate and pay point. Krisjan-se-nek is about 1.6 km farther on.
